What is a Slot Machine?

In a slot machine, players insert cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, paper tickets with barcodes to activate reels that spin and rearrange symbols. When a winning combination is achieved, the player earns credits based on a paytable. Symbols vary depending on the game, but classic symbols include fruit and stylized lucky sevens. Slot games are generally themed around a particular style, location, or character.

A narrow depression, notch, or aperture, especially one for receiving something, such as a coin or letter: a mail slot; the eight-o’clock slot for broadcasts. A period of time or position within a schedule or sequence: My hairdresser’s appointment is at the two-o’clock slot.

Myths and misconceptions about slot play are common. Many people believe that a machine is more likely to hit after you push the button several times in a row, or that playing multiple machines at once increases your chances of winning. However, these beliefs are wrong. Modern slot machines use random number generators to determine the outcome of each spin, so the result of a single spin cannot reasonably be predicted by previous results.

A custom slot type is a regular expression (regex) that the bot uses to match values in an utterance. To create a slot type, click Add Slot Type in the left pane. In the Name slot, type a name for the slot type. Then, in the Matching slot field, type a regex pattern that matches the value of the utterance.
