The Game of Poker

Poker is an addictive game with huge potential for socializing and relaxation. The word “poker” actually comes from the German term “pokh”, meaning “to play”. Poker is part of a family of online card games where players wager over which card is best based on the rules of that game. Poker is played in between people, and there are countless variations of poker, each requiring a unique strategy.

In American poker, two teams are made up of twenty-four players each; four persons sit at a table with their hands concealed and the other four members sit at a table opposite from them. Four persons may be involved in face-to-face play, or ten may be involved in an over the table game. There is no middleman in American poker, and all the players may see each other face to face, but may not talk to each other. One person may have a “board” with markings on it, usually representing the value of the hand; these are called “chips”, “tosses” or “no-limit”. A “jack” is used when the cards are to be turned over and represents the amount the player has spent on the hand, whether it has been a winning hand or not.

At the start of each hand, the player with the “board” gets to call. Then the other players must call, and the person with the “chips” must call as well. No player may call, while the other players are betting. Once the last player has called, the first player in line gets to take his regular chip, and the player who took the last chip also takes his regular chip. After the last hand has been dealt, the player with the highest chip becomes the winner.
