The Basics of Poker

A basic rule of poker is to fold a pair of kings if you owe nothing to the pot. Then, you check if you have a pair of queens. A call is always a good idea. If the odds are better, you should fold. In the following example, let’s assume that Brad raises a dime and Dennis calls. Then, you will see who has the higher hand in each of the three stages.

The poker table is usually made with chips. There are two kinds of chips: the red and the blue. The red chip is worth five whites, while the blue chip is worth two, four, or five reds. Before each round of poker, each player must “buy in” to the game by purchasing a chip. All players must buy in for the same amount of money. If you want to win, you must first make the best hands possible.

Almost all games of poker are played with poker chips. If there are seven players, the dealer should supply them. Each chip has a value. The lowest value chip is a white one. The other two are red, worth ten or twenty whites, and so on. During the game, each player “buys in” with chips and buys into the pot. Each player must also purchase a chip, usually the same amount as the last person.
