Poker – A Game of Chance and Skill

Poker is an American variant of the popular game Caribbean Craps, which was originated in Puerto Rico. Poker is a family of round card games where players wager over what hand is the best based on the rules of the game. It originated in the early nineteenth century in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and spread to other countries such as Ireland and Italy.

In the Draw Poker version, all cards are laid out from the start into three groups of cards face up. The remaining deck is covered with poker chips controlled by the player. A player may take as many chips as he wants, but if all of them are played and no more chips are left, the player has to call a bluff. He must say that he has either a Jack or a Nine in his hand and expects the other player to have a Royal flush, Straight, Four of a Kind, or Better than That. If the other player calls, then the player has to call again immediately without going for a draw. In the stud poker version, all cards are laid out from the start, face down, with the exception of the king, which is turned up.

There is no limit to the number of times a player can call a bluff. He may also go all in with a flush, full house, straight, four of a kind, or better than that in a single game. There are no special types of poker chips in tournament play. In a tournament match, each player has to have at least two good chips, but no more than ten in order to make the tournament. Also in tournament play, a player cannot use any of his chips to call a raise that he believes is being made on his hand.
